Shock to the System
A Donald Strachey Mystery (5th in series)
Richard Stevenson
Publisher: St. Martin's Press ISBN-10: 0-312-13610-2 ISBN-13: 978-0-312-13610-9 Published: December 1995
Synopsis: Why are three very different people asking Strachey to prove a suicide was actually a murder?
Albany's favorite gay private detective Don Strachey is asked by three—count 'em, three—different people to prove that a gay man's supposed suicide was murder and nail the person responsible.
According to police, Paul Haig died by suicide, from an overdose of prescription medication and liquor. But the dead man's boozy mother thinks that it's actually murder, and that the murderer was her son's lover. The lover, however, insists it was certainly murder, but that the murderer was actually a shrink making his living attempting to transform gays into heterosexuals. The shrink insists to Strachey that though he didn't do it, he does not have an alibi, so he's very interested in finding the real killer.
